Title IX & Sexual Misconduct in Education
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 is a landmark federal law that prohibits discrimination based on gender in any educational program or activity that receives federal financial assistance. The law applies broadly across all educational institutions, from elementary schools to universities, and covers sexual assault, harassment, and violence, and discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity and expression in schools that receive federal funding. These wrongdoings can be perpetrated by students, professors, teachers or coaches, or others in the academic community.
Attorney Laura Reasons helps students, survivors and individuals navigate Title IX complaints and proceedings in K-12 schools, colleges and universities in Illinois and across the country, and litigates these matters in state and Federal Courts, including:
- Sexual harassment
- Sexual assault and violence
- Gender-based discrimination
- Retaliation
- Institutional misconduct
- Related state law claims, including breach of contract and tort, including in schools that do not receive federal funding
Schools operate Title IX processes under their own internal rules, and institutions often prioritize protecting their reputation over protecting students. The Title IX grievance procedures are governed by detailed federal regulations, which can be difficult to navigate without legal guidance. This puts students at a significant disadvantage, as they may not know how to properly present their case or what their rights are.
Having an attorney can help ensure that evidence is handled correctly, that you are treated fairly throughout the process, and that your rights against retaliation are protected. When facing one of the most challenging experiences of your academic life, it is important to have an advocate who will fight for you and stand up for your rights.
